The first post on my new blog
Ooooph!
That wasn’t any fun. (Well okay, maybe a little.)
For the past year I’ve been running this blog using the Blogger tools. I did it that way because it was fast and cheap and I didn’t have to bother my already over-worked wife to help me set it up. Those of you who use Blogger know that it’s a sub-optimal tool, but sometimes good enough right now is beats better later.
But with the release of Firefox 1.5, Blogger went from being good enough to unusable. Apparently it’s something to do with inter-browswer variations in CSS rendering, but whatever the case, my blog stopped being visible in Firefox (works just fine in other browsers). Not just a bad render, but completely invisible – as if the links that point people to this blog were deadends.
Not cool.
Even not cooler is it didn’t do this all the time or with all the blog pages, making trouble shooting the CSS style sheet that was driving the page nearly impossible. My poor wife nearly went mad trying to figure it all out.
Well fuck that.
Yesterday we did an install of Word Press on our server (thanks Sam!) and migrated the archives over. There are still a few things to work out. I’ve got to re-enter all my links into WP’s db driven system, and now we’ve got a minor reverse bug – when I put our cover image in the sidebar, it renders fine in Firefox, but it’s fugly in Safari. Grrr. But that’s minor to being invisible.
