There's a place for angst and I can appreciate bittersweet and light and shade where they create contrast and richness, but I do like joy .

I do wonder if arousal and an intent to arouse sexual feelings will ever be taken as a serious and legitimate pursuit in filmmaking. Even the actress who stars in Nine Songs will tell you there in the behind the scenes "No one comes out of the cinema turned on...".

God forbid that that should be the case! It's a strange world. Maybe as time goes by sex in films might gain currency to the point that just every now and then a filmmaker can sneak one in that's a bit more joyous. Occasionally I see moments of it in films like Gadjo dilo, or even Sex and Lucia, in the first case, an earthy, boistrous regard for sex buried within a complex little film with a good deal of sadness and the latter, a more playful, flirtacious take on sex within a film that's almost indecipherable. I think that's one of the reasons I liked Nine Songs - it's simple and even if they didn't set out to turn me on, I liked the sex. :)

Are you telling me these films are going to be downers, Ell? Oh yeah, that's right. If you want make a film about sex and be taken seriously, there must be suffering. What fun.
