“Damon and Hunter” heads to queerDOC in Sydney, Australia

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

Success begets success (which can seem so unfair when it’s happening to someone else!); we are more than happy to take our good luck and roll with it. A round of poster and handbill re-design, press-release re-writes and all the rest of the falderal that goes with properly promoting the film. It is both exciting and exhausting, exhausting not because it’s hard work, but because it causes hopefulness, and hopefulness causes me to begin to steel myself against disappointment. (I’m surprised to find out) I’m fragile that way.

For most of my professional life most of my work was on commission – please makes us a picture of X to accomplish Y and we will pay you Z. It’s all very tidy, at least by comparison to making films and then hoping people will like them, hoping people will buy them.

One of my favorite things to say when I want to sound shrewd is that expectation management is the key to a successful low-budget film. But what do you do when something succeeds far beyond any of your own (well-managed) expectations – when hopefulness is feed log after log, and perhaps a dash of gasoline now and then? It’s a bit dizzying, but I hope I get the chance to get used to it!

Below is the press release for queerDOC, in all its self-aggrandizing glory. Longtime readers will recognize bit and pieces from previous blog posts. This journal keeping is proving useful! (Thanks Professor Wenger!)

Syndey, Australia Fresh off its win at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival (Best Documentary), Damon and Hunter: Doing it Together moves on to the 2006 edition of queerDOC, the world’s premiere queer documentary film festival. This year’s festival will feature two screenings of Damon and Hunter, to be held at the Dendy Cinema King Street Newtown. Show times are Tuesday 12th Sept at 9.00pm and Wednesday 13th Sept at 7.00pm

Damon and Hunter: Doing it Together is the third in an ongoing series of documentaries from New York based director Tony Comstock. Comstock’s films explore the real and vital role that sexual pleasure plays in binding couples’ relationships. In this case, the couple in question are long time lovers Damon DeMarco and Hunter James, and the film centers around an explicit portrayal of Damon and Hunter making love.

Truly adult depictions of explicit sexuality are all but absent from the modern cinematic landscape, and when they do appear they are inevitably contextualized by despair or ennui. Indeed, the “intent to arouse” is often cited as the dividing line between art and porn. In the whole range of emotions a director might hope to incite in his audience, arousal remains the last taboo – a taboo Tony Comstock gleefully breaks.

“It’s my absolute intention and hope that watching “Damon and Hunter” will be an erotic and arousing experience, ” says Comstock. “Just as a horror movie is intended to scare the pants off the audience, “Damon and Hunter” is absolutely intended to have an effect below the belt. I want people who see this film to think about how good sex can and should be; and in the same way that a horror director wants a physical reaction from his or her audience, I want a physical reaction too. I want this film to turn the audience on, and I want them to feel good about the way this movie touches them.”

To that end the film is completely frank in its depiction of how Damon DeMarco and Hunter James pleasure each other. There are no coy angles; no fade to black. In fact, the camera gazes lovingly at the carnal details, drinking in flesh and reflecting desire. Visually “Doing it Together” is the collision of sex and the moving image rendered as pure joy. But the impact of this film isn’t limited to what we see.

“Flesh without context is no more of interest to me than sex without love,” says Comstock. “In this film, the context is provided through an intimate conversation with Damon and Hunter that in some ways is even more revealing than the sex.”

Tony Comstock offers a new vision. It’s not art, not pornography, but a genuinely entertaining and cinematic exploration and celebration of the very human experience of sex. “Damon and Hunter: Doing it Together” is a hard core love story; it’s a date movie; a fun, sexy and provocative evening out!

First held in October 1998, queerDOC has subsequently become established as an important event on the Australian and international gay and lesbian film festival calendar. queerDOC remains the world’s only documentary film festival focusing on queer (gay, lesbian transgender, transsexual, intersex etc) documentary films. As such it has a worldwide reputation and has access to the best of queer documentaries from around the world.

Show Me Your Fuckface

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

Some few days ago, Chelsea Girl made a post to her Pretty Dumb Things entitled “mirror, mirror, against the wall” where she introduced the concept of ‘the fuckface’.

I have devoted no small measure of my creative and professional life to capturing the beauty I see in the fuckface, and so it was with great interest that I read GC’s take on her own fuckface; especially the horror she says she experiences when, in the midst of a good shag, she catches a glimpse of her own fuckface, or her imperfect body.

Over the next fews I wrote CG a note, then she wrote back, then I mowed the lawn and thought, then we exchanged another e-mail or two. In her last e-mail of the exchange CG said, “I think you should turn this email into a post”, so I am, and here it is:

Back in the late 90s, when Peggy and I were shooting the tests that became Comstock Films, we’d post to places on the internet where we thought sexually adventurous and libertine couples might be reading. Many of the responses were of the “and then we’ll film you, right?” variety, and a few “and then we’ll film you and then we’ll all fuck, right?”, but enough of the responses got what we were doing and were at least curious to find out more.

We’d invite these curious couples to our studio for a private viewing of films we had made with previous couples (our offer was no strings attached, no releases signed and no copies kept, but in fact all every couple we ever shot was happy to allow us to keep a copy of their love scene for us to show privately.)

More often than not, these couples would come through the door with Him leading Her; Him quite certain this was something they wanted to do, her more reticent.

But a funny thing would happen as they watch the footage of the couples that had come before them. Her would see these women – with their ache scars, or c-section scar, or small, saggy, baby chew breast, or ample thighs – completely lost in the delight of being pleasures, and completely delighted in having their pleasure, their fuckfaces captured for all time. Her would see awareness of it all bubble up through ecstasy, flash a brilliant smile across the woman’s face, and then dive back into the deep end of the pleasure pool.

And more often than not, by the end of the screening, Her was ready to be filmed, “So when can we do this?” she’d asked, often before I had even had a chance to hit rewind.

In particular one of those brilliant smiles stands out in my mind. It was the second couple we ever shot a test with – let’s call them Dan and Denise.

Dan and Denise were in their mid thirties, and while both of them were attractive by any measure, both of their bodies were far from flawless. Dan was virtually assless and had the beginings of a paunch. Denise had small, saggy, baby-chewed breasts (fried eggs, I think she said), and a hint of cellulite on her thighs.

This was of no concern to me. My only concern about them was that they be comfortable enough in front our our cameras for them to relax and enjoy each other, and perhaps even enjoy the thrill of being photographed. My only goal was that Peggy and I have a chance to experiement with coverage techniques that would allow me to capture footage that could later be edited into a naturalistic depiction of two people loving each other.

Denise’s awareness of being filmed bubbled up and broke into many smiles during their session, but the one that stands out happened right as Dan was fisting her (for the second time). She was on her hands and knees while Dan was being her, his fist churning away inside her. Denise was lost in it completely, eyes closed, calling grunting and calling out her husband’s name over and over “Oh Dan, oh Dan, oh Dan…”

In the midst of this, her eyes opened and she saw her fuckface in the mirrored headboard. She smiled at the rediculous ecstasy of it all, then her smile broke into a delighted laugh, Dan’s fist still churning away in her belly. Her laugh rose up and then dove headlong into the deep end of the pleasure pool. Her arms gave way and she was face down, ass up; completely lost again as Dan finished her off with his fist.

I know for a fact that Denise showed their film to many people, saggy boobs, celulite, fuckface, and all. I don’t think she ever felt the least bit self-conscious about letting people see that she did not have the sculpted, airbrushed body of a 19 year old girl. But I do know for a fact that she was delighted to let people see that she what a healthy, hearty, lusty woman she was, and what a beautiful, sexy film we had made with her and her husband.

Damon & Hunter Sells Out!

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

Melbourne, Australia — Despite unseasonably cold weather and a steady rain, an overflow crowd turned out for last night’s world premiere of Damon and Hunter: Doing it Together at the 2006 Melbourne Underground Film Festival, (MUFF).

It was the sort of night when most Melbourners choose to stay home and watch the tube, but that didn’t stop an overflow crowd from showing up for the unveiling of Tony Comstock’s latest erotic effort, Damon and Hunter: Doing it Together . Late arrivals struggled to pack themselves into the Glitch lounge as the crowd waited expectantly for doors to the theater to open. Once they did, it quickly became clear that folding chairs in the aisle weren’t going to provide enough seats. As the first screening started, hasty arrangements were made for another screening which started in a second theater 15 minutes later.

“Showing sexually explicit films publicly is strictly forbidden in Australia,” noted director Tony Comstock, “so it’s incredibly flattering that MUFF and Glitch would take a chance on showing this film. As much as it is a celebration of sex and love, the public exhibition of Damon and Hunter is an act of defiance, a challenge to the status quo, a pointed question – why is the depiction of joyous, passionate, carnal love treated like a crime?”

In a world where it seems the only way “serious films” address sex is by having one or more of the lovers die or get cholera or consumption, “Doing it Together” dares to show sex as pure joy, where the only consequences are good. In the whole range of emotions a director might hope to incite in his audience, arousal remains the last taboo – a taboo Tony Comstock’s films gleefully break.

“It’s my sincerest hope that last night, in that darkened theater in Melbourne, people were getting turned on by Damon and Hunter. I hope jeans were getting stretched tight by hard cocks; I hope panties were being dampened by wet pussies. I hope people had smiles on their faces as they thought about how wonderful it feels to love and be loved.”

The much ballyhooed “Free Lube!” promotion threatened to become an embarrassment when it was realized that supplies of Eros Bodyglide 30ml bottles were insufficient to provide for the overflow crowd. In the end one-per-person became one-per-couple, and a minor crisis was averted.

“I’ve always thought my films would make a great appetizer for a couple before they made a main course out of each other, ” said Comstock. “I’m glad that so many people came to see this film with someone they love!”

A Criminal Intent to Arouse

Tuesday, July 11th, 2006

Right now several dozen people are sitting together in the dark in a small theater in the Fitzroy district of Melbourne Australia. Along with the theater owners and the MUFF festival organizers they are about to become party to a crime. They are about to be party to the public exhibtion of Damon and Hunter: Doing it Together, a sexually explicit film that has been officially rated X by the Australian government. Because it is X-rated, it is illegal to present Damon and Hunter publicly, even to a theater full of adults who know exactly what they’ve come to see. Because it is X-rated, it’s even illegal to sell Damon and Hunter in many parts of Australia.

We could have challenged this rating (as 9 Songs did), but it’s rather costly (about $8,000) with no certainty of success – too much for a small studio like Comstock Films. So our lovely little film about love and sex goes into the world as a bit of a pariah, a scarlet letter X emblazened on its chest.

So as much as it is a celebration of sex and love, the public exhibtion and distribution of Damon and Hunter is a wilful act of defiance, a challenge to the status quo, a pointed question – why is the depiction of joyous, passionate, carnal love treated like a crime?

Meanwhile, in another part of the Common Wealth, The Tate Modern, one of Englands most prestigeous museums is preparing to show Destricted, a collection of sexually explicit shorts. Says the British newspaper The Telegraph:

“Destricted, an Anglo-American production, is a two-hour compilation of seven short films made by artists and independent film-makers who were commissioned to “explore the fine line where art and pornography intersect”.“It is supervised by Gaspar Noé, the French director whose 2002 film Irreversible featured a nine-minute rape scene. Critics who watched it at the Sundance and Cannes film festivals say it leaves little to the imagination.

“It features numerous acts of sexual intercourse. The contribution of the British artist Sam Taylor-Wood, the wife of the Old Etonian art dealer Jay Jopling, is an eight-minute scene of a man masturbating outdoors in Death Valley. Another section shows a man having sex with the driveshaft of a 50-ton lorry.

“After considerable agonising, the British Board of Film Classification granted an 18 rating for Destricted this week, to be released uncut on DVD. But it said that it must carry a warning that it “contains strong, real sex”.

“A source at the board described the film as “awful”. Unusually, it was not approved until it had been seen by the board’s president, Sir Quentin Thomas.

“The board had considered granting a Restricted 18 DVD classification, reserved for work intended to be arousing. That would have meant that a Destricted DVD could be sold only in sex shops and would have ruled out the possibility of its being put on sale in the shop at Tate Modern, where the film is to be given five screenings in September.

“Sir Quentin said that Destricted was so explicit that it would normally attract an R18 rating but he judged that it was a work of art not intended to arouse.

“He said: “In purpose and effect, this work is plainly a serious consideration of sex and pornography as aspects of the human experience.

“We think that there are no grounds for depriving adults of the ability to decide themselves whether they want to see it.”

“Tate Modern said the film was art not pornography.”

A man rubbing his penis on the drive shaft of a 50 ton lorry? No, that doesn’t sound like it was intended to arouse, does it? But is it art? I suppose that depends on whether it’s presented in black and white or color.

But the gist of the Destrict ratings kerfluffle doesn’t seem seem to have anything to do with art or porn. It seems to have to do with whether or not the Tate Modern will be able to sell DVDs of Destricted in the museum gift shop. If Destrict is art (18-rated), they can. If Destricted is porn (R18-rated), they can’t. As is often the case, issues that are offered as questions of morality or aesthetics are actually questions of commerce.

My films are not about “the fine line where art and pornography intersect”, they are about the broad vista of love, sex, desire, and pleasure. I have said and will continue to say that my films are made with the absolute intention and hope that my audience finds them arousing. (Which is why it’s unlikely you’ll ever see rape, or lorries, or Death Valley in my films.)

It’s my sincerest hope that right now, in a darkened theater in Melbourne, people are getting turned on by Damon and Hunter. I hope jeans are getting stretched tight by hard cocks; I hope panties are being dampened by wet pussies. I hope people have smiles on their faces as they think about how wonderful it feels to love and be loved.

What do you suppose Sir Quintin would have to say about that? What would the Tate Modern say? What do you say?

Go Give My Wife Some Love

Saturday, July 1st, 2006

I am a braggart, not usually considered a good trait. But it turns out that if you want to make money making movies, you’d better like telling people how wonderful you and your films are. On that score I’d give myself a B+; good enough, but not nearly top of the line.

Peggy is not a braggart. In addition to being my partner in crime, she is also a published author and a top-flight designer with a long list of national clients. Almost no one knows this about her, because never mind not bragging, she doesn’t even tell people what she does. Where boasting is concerned, she is the ying to my yang.

Which means she must be pretty thrilled with the D&H poster to have made a blog post about it yesterday. Go to her blog and give her some love. No one deserves it more than her!

GayVN Digs MUFF!

Saturday, July 1st, 2006

From the GayVN.com website:

MELBOURNE, Australia - New York-based filmmaker Tony Comstock’s Damon and Hunter: Doing It Together will be shown here as part of the 2006 Melbourne Underground Film Festival (MUFF).

Describing the movie, Comstock said, “Damon and Hunter is a frank, humane and erotic exploration of the sexual and emotional relationship between longtime lovers Damon Demarco and Hunter James. The film offers a candid look at the central role that sex plays in the relationship between these two men.”

The two men are also U.S. porn stars. Demarco has appeared in such movies as Titan’s Alabama Takedown, James in Rascal Video’s Wrong Side of the Tracks 2.

“It is my absolute intention and hope that watching Damon and Hunter will be an erotic and arousing experience,” said Comstock. “Just as the director of a horror movie hopes to scare the pants off an audience, Damon and Hunter is absolutely intended to have an effect below the belt. I want people who see this film to think about how good sex can and should be; and in the same way that a horror director wants a physical reaction from his or her audience, I want a physical reaction as well. I want this film to turn you on, and I want you to feel good about the way this movie does that to you.”

Festival Director Richard Wolstencroft said, “Damon and Hunter is confronting, in your face, open and sexually frank… exactly the kind of film we like at MUFF.”

The movie will be screened on Tuesday, July 11, at 9 p.m. at The Glitch bar in the North Fitzroy district of Melbourne.

The MUFF program can be viewed at MUFF.com.au.
