I got an email from a reader telling me that when they searched my name, they couldn't find my site on google anymore. This was the first I heard of the wierdness. I assumed, being in Vietnam, that the problem was with the earthquake in Taiwan and the cable being taken out, but aparently not! Chelsea Girl's blog also disappeared!

Hmmm...I was wondering if it wasn't an anti-intelligent sex conspiracy. I realize that, for you guys, this is a really serious financial matter, whereas, for me, it's just a strange inexplicable drop in visits, but it was strangely disenfranchising.

The worst part about it was that the links that came up when I searched my name were... ugh, really badly written stuff.

"The “adult internet” is rife with people who really have nothing to offer the world save their efforts to juke search results. It’s a different kind of spamgame, but in the end it’s volume driven, with few penalities for a low signal to noise ratio."

If big business put the same effort toward shutting down Nigerian Inheritance Scams, Discount Mortgages, Cheap Software & Printer Refills, et cetera spam, we wouldn't cry "censorship!"

However, it seems that anything having to do with sexuality takes the first hit... How about "selective enforcement" instead of "censorship?"

cheers,
Matt and Khym

Hi there Tony. I noticed exactly the same thing on our blog. Our links from Google suddenly stopped on 19 December and came back again on 27 December. Seems to be pretty much back to normal now.

Now we've got back our No1 spot on 'my wife is a whore'. :)
(Can I sue Google for defamation, do you think?!)

I have deliberately linked to your site to help send you more traffic. C. and I have watched one of your films, and found it very real. While you're not about polyamory, I can perhaps send some of my readers to you, since Google is all prudish now. Hard to say if they're going to drop me or not.

In light of the fact that the mentioned blogs have been 'restored' while unnamed blogs languish, it's hard not to feel like there's something more going on here than an algorithmic snafu. This is what I posted to Google's own usergroup devoted to these sorts of things:

What troubles me is that a quick survey is that similarly organized [duplicate content]non-sex oriented wordpress blogs don't seem to have been similarly penalized, and that leads me to suspect that sexually oriented words/content have been given extra weight in Googles penalty scheme. I'd make a wager that slang sex words (cunt, cock, pussy, fuck) have been given extra weight in this penality scheme. Looking at how TGPs and other sex-oriented sites operate, I can see why Google might think this is a workable strategy.

But my own personal experience is that "coitus" or "vulva" are not a words one often hears between lovers, which leaves me at a loss as to how to write about my work in a google friendly way.

Tony,

Thanks for the shout out. I'm glad that this Google snafu has been resolved for you and Tiny Nibbles/Violet Blue. There are a lot of us, however, who remain in the unGoogleable gulag.

Sigh.

I have written and complained and have urged my readers to do so too. I just want my rightful place on the Google restored.

Thank you again for the help.
