[...] But hey, this is life as a parent, isn’t it? You don’t always get to pick and choose where your teachable moments come from. Even the best filters don’t always work. Life comes at you and your kids, and you are responsible for seeing them through it. You stay involved with your kids’ lives, you watch what they’re watching on TV, you stay aware of where they’re going online, and you talk with them about their experiences and understandings. Sometimes, you have to explain things that make you uncomfortable. Sometimes, you have to (try to) explain society’s strange hypocrisies and priorities. [...]

All I can say is this. If even a small fraction of the parents out there raising young children are as honest, real, and thoughtful as you two, there's still hope for this world yet. I just hope that as my little toddler gets older, I'll have the courage to be as forthright with him as you are with your future upright citizens.

Hello Em, thanks for your encouragement.

I don't know that Peggy and I are all that unusual in our point of view about sex. What might be unusual is that we've found a way to voice to our point of view which is strong without being (too) confrontational. The current evironment gives unwarrented exposure to and thereby encourages (often purposefully) strident points of view. I am perhaps most proud of the fact that our films and the ideas they represent are unflinching, but also gentle-hearted.

Thanks for this beautiful and intimate sharing. I myself find it inspiring to know that there are parents of such a mindset amidst our culture seemingly -- and in my view misguidedly -- bent on repressing, oppressing, and vilifying sex, often at the expense of tragically skewing its understanding as such by children and adolescents (and thus, eventually, adults).

And indeed, the incredible emphasis on the above juxtaposed with what appears to be woefully little concern (often by the same individuals) for things like the fact that policy makers in this country are allowing or even condoning the killing and torturing of people around the world is, to me, nothing less than astounding.

Sincerely,
Emerald
