September is for Catching Waves, Catching Fish and Catching Up
Wednesday, September 10th, 2008
It is an odd feature of the North Eastern calender that September marks the beginning of Autumn, when in fact, the things that I like best about Summer are at their very best in September. The weather is sunny and warm, the water is at it’s warmest, the fishing is just coming online, and we get our best and most consistent surf in September.
But there is a distinctive bite in today’s offshore wind. So while September might be Summer’s very best month, it is Autumn none the less. Along with the bite in the air there is a palpable feeling that it is time to get back to work. Here are a few of the things that are in the hopper at Comstock Films:
Bill and Desiree: Love is Timeless is coming along nicely. If it has been hard to edit, it is only because there is so much good stuff, and that can make it hard to find the right way to shape the story. We hope to have it up for pre-order (at a modest discount) in the next month.
From time to time we get queries about distributing other people’s films, but so far nothing has been a good fit. But last weekend we got an inquiry from a well-known still photographer who’s just completed his first feature. He’s sending a screener and I’m looking forward to seeing it. For now, the one hint I will drop as to his identity is that the screener is in PAL format.
Speaking of still photography, that’s how I got my start, and I’ve been itching to return to my roots. For a long time now I’ve had a vision of how (for lack of a better word) middle-aged women could be depicted photographically; sort of an Abby Winters meets 1970s Playboy a la Tony Comstock. Stay tuned to this channel of a call for models.
I am in the process of putting together a lecture tour of Australia, tentatively titled, “The Crimimal Intent to Arouse: Sex, Cinema and Censorship”. I am hoping to be down under sometime this Winter. Maybe I’ll even shoot a short film while I’m down there. Wouldn’t that be a hoot? It’s illegal to screen my films in Australia, but not illegal for me to make one. (Oh, BTW, the OFLC banned Xana and Dax from an upcoming film fest down under.)
We have the rough outline of a narrative film project. Both technically and thematically it borrows heavily from what we’ve learned making our docs. Casting will follow the usual Comstock requirements, which conventional wisdom says will make casting the film all but impossible. We will see. Again, watch this space for further information.
So there it is, my end of Summer vacation post. Plenty to look forward to in the upcoming months!
