Setting Sail Again.

At was about this time last year that we pushed away from a private dock on a small creek in Down East Georgia and began the four month odyssey that was to become The Trip of a Lifetime.

Tomorrow family Comstock sets sail again. This we depart from just a short cab ride from our apartment; and instead of an old sloop, we’ll be on an ocean liner. In ten days we’ll cover more distance than all of last year’s trip.

I’ve never done anything like this before. The closest I’ve come to a “professional vacation” is being on professional side of things, back when I used to be a river guide. I understand that unlike last year’s trip — from which I returned 20 pounds lighter, a virtual bronzed god — I can expect to gain at least a pound a day. If true, I’ll need a six month sailing trip to regain my former lean self.

Anticipating this trip ought to be all smiles, but sadly it’s not. A family member is ill, gravely in fact; so all those of the clan who can have gathered for what very well may turn out to be a last waltz. That’s a new one for me too. I’m not as young as I used to be.
