TONY COMSTOCK INTERVIEWED BY SUSIE BRIGHT
Sex-positive pioneer Susie Bright interviews Tony Comstock
on the subjects of Ashley and Kisha, and How To Make
a Sex Movie You Give a Damn About:
This past year, a friend turned me onto Comstock Films, a
unique erotic movie company who make in-depth erotic documentaries
that center on the story of one couple and their relationship.
Each couple are very different: age, race, gender-matchups,
personal style. It's like the reinvention of the Melting Pot,
with sexual chemistry as the starting point.
I say they're "documentaries," because even though
you would easily call these movies "porn," or "erotica,"
they're also the kind of thing you might see at a film festival—
or some PBS series, if Public Broadcasting suddenly woke up
tomorrow and went X-rated. It's MasterFuck Theater!
I was so intrigued with their work, I had to find out who "Comstock"
was. I knew it had to be someone witty enough to give their
company the name of the most famous Puritan of the 20th Century,
the man who founded the original "New York Society for
the Suppression of Vice."

COMSTOCK
FILMS FEATURED IN OPRAH WINFREY'S O MAGAZINE
In the artcle Eyes Wide Open (July, 2007), Violet
Blue writes: "Comstock Films, maker of high-quality, documentary-style,
real-couples videos, aggressively markets to women with the simple
tagline "Women love real sex."
The sidebar, by Rachel Bertsche, lists a "starter kit of
quality adult films" recommended by Violet Blue. Comstock
Films is listed first: "Comstock Films's Real People, Real
Life, Real Sex series: Each movie in this series focuses on one
actual couple. "Director Tony Comstock shows what it looks
like when two people who are in love have sex," says Blue.
"It's beautiful—the antithesis of shapeless, boring
porn in which everyone is just going through the motions."
XANA & DAX HELPS COUPLE ACE THEIR "SEX HOMEWORK"
In
the article "Sex Homework" (Women's Health,
November 2006), real life couple Stacey and Bryce have this to
say about Xana
& Dax: When Opposites Attract:
This was our favorite," Bryce says. "There was no plot;
it's a real couple having sex. They looked like people we would
know and be attracted to." Stacey agrees. "I loved Xana
and Dax because they're a real couple, with genuine orgasms and
a sincere admiration for each other," she says. "We
watched it straight through, and even though we were as tired
as usual, we had sex right after." And they changed their
usual routine by trying a new position from the video.
DNA FEATURES DAMON & HUNTER
Damon
& Hunter: Doing It Together is featured in issue
#76 of DNA magazine (Winter, 2006.) The two page article also
includes an interview with Hunter James in which he talks about
his relationship with Damon, and their experience in making the
film.
Says Hunter:
"We were both excited about the opportunity to do something
different and interesting. After talking to Tony it was really
obvious how passionate he is about the work. We’d seen some
of the previous work and both liked the concept. They were looking
to shoot their first gay couple so we contacted them and took
it from there.
DAMON & HUNTER HAS X-FACTOR FOR
APRIL
The
April, 2006 issue of X-Factor
reviews Damon
& Hunter: Doing It Together:
"Fans of Damon and Hunter should delight in the sheer amount
of themselves they share in the interview and the frankness of
their comments about themselves, their friends and family, and
the evolution of their personal and sexual relationship.
Damon and Hunter fills a noticeable gap in adult erotic
entertainment by filming a popular and extremely attractive real-life
couple expressing their love and sexuality in a natural way."
JANE MAGAZINE DECLARES MARIE & JACK
A CLASSIC!
In
the March 2006 issue, Jane Magazine says:
“Here are nine classics that may do it for you…Marie
and Jack: A Hardcore Love Story. You’ll
like it if you “make love” instead of “hump”.
In this case, a real-life couple tells us how they fell in love,
then they take us into their bedroom.”.
TONY COMSTOCK CHATS WITH EROS ZINE
Eros writer Abby Ehmann interviews our very own Tony Comstock
in a wide-ranging
chat about cameras, film vs. video and what constitutes
hot on-screen sex:
TIME OUT NEW YORK MAKES TIME FOR COMSTOCK FILMS
Porn:
Made in NYC is the cover story for Time Out New York's annual
sex issue, and includes a mention for Comstock Films in their
article "The
New Pornographers":
"One feature of the local aesthetic is that it avoids the
stereotypical silicone-enhanced Barbie types...Comstock Films
finds real couples willing to do the deed on camera."
For more on the New York erotic filmmaking scene, including a
fantastic full page photo of Comstock Films' blogging favorite
Audacia Ray, pick up a copy of the October 6-12 issue.
MARIE & JACK TOPS TANGO MAGAZINE'S LIST OF "THE
SERIOUS STUFF"
The
Fall 2005 issue of Tango
Magazine features writer Amy Braunschweiger's article Was
That Movie Good For You?, an exploration of the role of erotic
films can play in spicing up a relationship.
Comstock Films Marie
& Jack: A Hardcore Love Story tops Ms. Braunschweiger's
list of recommended explicit films, with Xana
& Dax: When Opposites Attract also getting a nod:
"Marie and Jack, porn stars married in real life,
have the genuine chemistry and knowledge of each other’s
bodies to make this film sizzle. It starts slowly, with the
couple discussing the intimate details of their love, before
getting down and dirty. Xana and Dax: When Opposites Attract,
offers a similar scenario."
ADULT STAR TERA PATRICK RECOMMENDS MARIE & JACK
IN MEN'S FITNESS
The August, 2005 issue of Men's
Fitness magazine features an interview with top adult film
star Tera Patrick. Aside from her own movies, which titles are
recommended for couples seeking a little "passionate together
time"? Number one on the list—Marie
& Jack: A Hardcore Love Story.
COMSTOCK FILMS IN ESQUIRE
July found Esquire's
Stacey Grenrock Woods trying to answer that perennial reader
question, "My girlfriend wants to start watching porn together,
but only of the 'for women, by women' variety. Can you give me
some suggestions for both titles and directors?" to which
Ms. Woods replies:
"You may want to try a title from Comstock Films, a company
that specializes in films of real couples having real sex, documentary
style. Founder and director Tony Comstock offers an alternative
for those people who find themselves turned off by the established
porn aesthetic."
While not strictly falling into the "by women/for women"
category, we're tickled that Ms. Woods mentioned our company,
and we are proud to produce films that both men and women can
enjoy watching.
TIME.COM
MENTIONS COMSTOCK FILMS
We were very excited to discover that Time.com writer
Richard Corliss mentioned Comstock Films and quoted T.C. twice
in his 5/7/05 column "That
Old Feeling: Porn Again" — a follow-up to his earlier
"When
Porno Was Chic" article on the heyday of 70's porn.
T.C.'s first quote appears in the second section of the article,
How big is the porn video industry?, questioning the
$57 billion a year worldwide figure Corliss had reported from
Paul Fishbein, the founding president of Adult Video News:
Tony Comstock writes: "I know there have been cuts to
the Time Inc. research staff, but you should really check those
figures Fishbein gave you. They're wildly exaggerated, probably
by an order of magnitude."
Comstock Films is mentioned, and T.C. quoted again, in the article's
final section, What's the future of porn?:
I haven't been paying attention, so I'm grateful to readers
who tell me that, for all the attention paid to sex superstar
Jenna Jameson, the next stage is personalized (or do I mean
privatized?) porn. Tony Comstock, whose Comstock Films produces
a series called Real Life, Real People, Real Sex, writes: "For
the last 10 or so years I've been making sex films with one
specific goal in mind: to find a way to show people having sex
that doesn't make the viewer want to do anything but have sex.
I've had some modest success, but the financial realities of
porn are constraining to say the least. In the 'porn industry'
$25K is considered a workable budget, $250K is an epic."
Both the original article and the follow up are thought provoking
and well worth reading. Thanks TIME!
